Key Points To Consider When Hiring A Professional Pest Control Firm

RoachWhether it’s rodents, wasps, mice or cockroaches, coping with pests in your home can be a very unpleasant experience and can dramatically increase your stress levels. Unfortunately, catching them and removing them can also be a difficult task, especially if you’re out of the house for most of the day. That’s why it is often a good idea to hire the professionals, who have years of experience in dealing with pest-related issues. This article looks at some of the main reasons why people prefer to use pest control firms as opposed to removing the pests on their own.

Check Credentials

A reputable company will have a valid license and certificate. Find out if it is a member of the British Pest Control Association, a major trade body representing more than 7,000 people and more than 500 members across the country. You may also want to consider hiring a pest control company that a friend, family member of neighbor has used, or try finding some online testimonials to see what previous customers have said about the service. The better their feedback, the better the company’s success rates.

Ask Plenty Of Questions Beforehand

For peace of mind, pest control firms may offer a guarantee with their services, although this does not necessarily mean that they will be able to remove all unwanted pests quickly and without delays. Before you hire the company, make sure they explain the procedures involved and ask as many questions as possible before signing a contract for a long term service. Even the most experienced professionals will not be able to answer all of your questions. So if they simply say ‘I don’t know’ and that they plan on finding out the answer as soon as possible, it shows that they are being honest and are not simple making up answers on the spot.

Does The Pricing Reflect The Market Rate?

It’s always tempting to choose the cheapest service, but consider the quality of service you may receive if you choose a pest control company that charges significantly lower prices than the industrial standard. Sometimes it is worth paying more to get more, although feedback and recommendations are still the most accurate way to determine how reputable a pest control firm is. Typically, companies with plenty of satisfied, long term customers will not need to charge extortionately high or exceedingly low prices.

Can You Remove Pests Yourself?

Mice are notoriously quick at escaping underneath the tiniest gaps and holes and are difficult to capture yourself. It is also dangerous to venture near wasps’ nests without sufficient protective gear. Pest control companies will have all the professional equipment, chemicals and other resources they will to combat pests and will usually know which techniques and/or products are most effective for different types of unwanted creatures or insects. If you decide to do the job on your own, you may have to resort to the internet to find out what you need to do. Of course, the internet is full of contradictions and is not always the most reliable source of information with regards to situations like this.

Mosquitoes Invade Alaska

Mosquito SwarmHow would you like to be caught in a swarm of ginormous mosquitoes? Well, in Alaska this is a true story.

Unbelievable Mosquito Masses

Researchers Jesse Krause and Shannan Sweet were caught in an awful swarm while researching at the Toolik Field Station on Alaska’s North Slope. Alaskan mosquitoes are notorious for their size and swarms. The mosquito is sometimes joked around as the state bird. They come in such numerous amounts that it’s unbelievable! Sweet states on video how “the whole horizon is nothing but mosquitoes.” Crazy Alaskan stuff!

Like with most insects, mosquitoes in Alaska have a season of strength. They’re most abundant in the summer from late June clear through July. That’s the worst time to be caught in shorts and a tank.

West Nile & Other Inconveniences

There are 35 species of mosquitoes in Alaska and of these 35 only 2 of them actually spread West Nile Virus in the state. The virus has not been able to take hold in higher latitudes. So Alaskans might have to deal with the angry swarms and itches, but this menacing virus doesn’t seem to pose a threat.

For the residents of the lower 48 states, the virus is much more common. West Nile Virus has been on the rise in the continental United States. More and more cases are reported each year. According to the CDC, there are 43 species of mosquito known to carry West Nile Virus.

The biggest inconvenience that these seekers present is physiological stress. Preparing for a summer, especially in Alaska, seems like quite the burden; from buying the right repellent to wearing the right clothing to not being caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. It is all a nuisance that really should just go away.

Mosquito Tips

Getting ready for that harsh summer time, when the mosquitoes are in full bloom is definitely agitating. The following are tips that mosquito plagued areas should consider every year.

• Stock up on anti-seeker supplies. Insect repellent with lots DEET will definitely work best. Purchasing mosquito coils might also help keep them away from your home or other unwanted locations.

• Wear appropriate clothing. It’s really tempting to wear shorts and sleeveless clothing during the summer, but beware that this will give the mosquitoes a free and easy meal.

• Wear neutral colors. Mosquitoes are attracted to dark colors.

• Don’t use scented lotions, shampoos, or perfumes. They love this.

A Few Good Reasons For Scheduling a Termite Inspection

Termite InspectorIf you are a homeowner that is lucky enough to have never had to deal with a termite problem thus far, you should count your blessings, but never get too comfortable and think you are forever safe. Annual termite inspections are recommended for good reason even if you haven’t come across any evidence to cause alarm. It can take several years of termites secretly chomping down on your house before you begin to see the damage they’ve created. It’s best to make sure you’re doing what you can do now to prevent a termite infestation or catch it early on before you’re stuck paying quite a bit out of pocket for home repairs. There are a few specific instances where you will want to schedule a professional termite inspection to ensure accurate results so you may take the appropriate course of action from there.

Buying or Selling a Home

An inspection is oftentimes required by the lender or insurance company before a house can be sold. If you are in the process of buying a home, arranging a termite inspection will allow you to know exactly what you are getting into before you’ve committed to the purchase. If no termite activity is found, you will be given peace of mind, and if there do appear to be signs of damage, you may have the choice of walking away from the sale, negotiating the price or working it out with the seller to take care of the situation. As a seller, you might not have any idea that termites have taken up residence alongside you, so an infestation hasn’t been disclosed, but if you’re serious about putting your home on the market, having a termite inspection done beforehand can be beneficial to assessing the problem before you have a potential buyer withdraw after their own discoveries come into the light.

Signs of Termite Activity

Any indication of termite activity means it’s definitely time to call in the experts for a termite inspection. Seeing swarms outside your home with your own eyes are never a good sign. This usually happens as a colony is relocating and looking for a place to settle in. Finding mud tubes in or around your structure reveals a termite’s means of travel into the foundation and walls from the soil. Hollow sounding wood is another signal of termites since they eat from the inside out, making them undetectable until the damage is already done. You should also keep an eye out for droppings and discarded wings, and if you notice any of these things, schedule an inspection right away to prevent further destruction.

Your Neighbors Have Discovered Termites

If your neighbors or another homeowner in close enough proximity to your beloved dwelling have uncovered a termite infestation in their home, it may be time to have an inspection done in yours. Although another house being treated in the neighborhood doesn’t necessarily mean termites are going to relocate next door or a few doors down, it can still be a scary thought. Speaking with your neighbors to determine some facts can be helpful in deciding what your next step should be, but it’s almost certain that you will want to remove all risk factors away from your home and then call a termite professional because it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

Many people have false peace living in a home that is unknowingly being damaged by termites. It will be more detrimental in the long run if they just let these pests continue to consume their structure and furniture than if they take responsibility and have regularly scheduled termite inspections.

Houston Fire Ants Driven Out By ‘Crazy’ Ant Species

Rasberry Crazy Ants Driving Out Fire Ants In Houston

Most of us in Houston are very familiar with the wretched Red Imported Fire ants. They make huge mounds on our property, and one painful sting from this pesky ant will be a constant reminder to keep your distance.

Over the last few years, Houston residents have been noticing a different species of ant; a species that some are calling far worse than the fire ant. I’m talking about the Rasberry (not raspberry) Crazy ant, and it’s beginning to displace fire ants in many areas in Houston.

Areas in Houston infested with Crazy ants have very few fire ants present. The reason being is that the Rasberry Crazy ants are an extremely invasive species that out-compete all other species of ant found in Houston.

Ants on raspberriesCrazy Ants vs. Fire Ants: Why Are Crazy Ants So Bad?

Rasberry Crazy ants are so bad, and so destructive, many residents are clamoring to get the fire ants back!

Crazy ants quickly outnumber other ant species because they multiply in even larger numbers. They are also difficult to control since they don’t eat the same poison baits as fire ants do.

Fire ants are in many ways very polite compared to crazy ants. When fire ants move into in your yard, they’ll form mounds and stay there. The Fire ants will only interact with you if you bother them or step on their unmistakable mounds.

Rasberry Crazy ants, on the other hand, “go everywhere,” invading homes and nesting in walls and crawlspaces, even damaging electrical equipment by swarming inside appliances. These ants are attracted to electrical impulses, chewing through electric insulation; they cause stop lights, air conditions, and other electrical equipment to short circuit. After being drawn into electrical equipment, they can easily cause shortages. Such actions often result in expensive repairs that inflict Houston homeowners.

On a positive note, Crazy ants don’t inflict painful stings like the Red Imported Fire Ants do.

Rasberry Crazy Ants

Imported from Brazil and Argentina in the 1930’s, the Rasberry Crazy ant has been infesting the Southeastern United States ever since. They are named after Tom Rasberry, the exterminator in Houston who discovered them. They are sometimes referred to as Tawny ants, but most people prefer the moniker “Crazy” because the ant’s erratic and non-linear movements.

Rasberry Crazy ants range in size from 1/16-1/8 inches long. They have slender bodies with long legs, and long antenna. They are reddish-brown in color, and are covered with fuzz. This fuzz makes the ant appear less glossy then other species of ant; and lead many to define the ant as “hairy.”

Watch Out! Bed Bugs Are Not Just In Beds

bedbug

You may think that you are safe from bed bugs, just because your home’s bedroom is not infested with them. Think again. Bed bugs are in a growing number of locations these days. Leaving your house may mean that you can brush up against bed bugs in taxi cabs, movie theaters, and even hospitals.

According to an annual survey of pest management professionals, bed bugs are in all sorts of places you may not have expected. In February, the National Pest Management Association and the University of Kentucky surveyed the in-the-field bed bug detection experts for the Bugs Without Borders report. ”In the third installment of the Bugs Without Borders survey, according to Pestworld.org, “bed bugs are found to be as much, if not more of a problem today than they were a few years ago.” Yikes!

Places bed bug detection professionals found bed bugs

The survey says that virtually all of the pest management professionals found bed bugs at some point in their work – 98 percent found them in apartments or condos, and 96 percent found them in single-family homes. But that is not the only place bed bugs were discovered. Here are some of the places the survey found bed bugs, and the percentage of pest management professionals who discovered bed bugs there:

  • Hospitals: 33 percent
  • Movie theaters: 10 percent
  • Schools and day care centers: 41 percent
  • Nursing homes: 46 percent
  • Transportation (train/bus/taxi) : 21 percent
  • College dorms: 47 percent
  • Office buildings: 36 percent
  • Hotels/motels: 75 percent
  • Libraries: 12 percent
  • Laundromats: 9 percent
  • Retail stores: 15 percent
  • Airplanes: 2 percent
  • Restaurants: 7 percent.

That means that you could potentially be exposed to bed bugs at a variety of diverse locations whenever you leave your home. Needless to say, this is a scary prospect.

Bed bugs the toughest insects to control

If this doesn’t make you want to itch, here is some more information to make your skin crawl. According to the pest control professionals, bed bugs are the toughest pest to control. The Bugs Without Borders survey says that 76 percent of the experts find the bugs the worst, with 17 percent finding ants the worst, 6 percent say roaches are the toughest, and 1 percent find termites the most difficult.

What can you do to stay away from bed bugs?

Pestworld.org says that “bed bugs are as much, if not more of a problem today than they were a few years ago,” and that “these pests continue to plague people wherever they go.” The site says that raising awareness of the issue and being vigilant about bed bugs can help alleviate the problem.

If you travel, or have had to spend much time away from home, like in a hospital, you can keep bed bugs from being a problem in your home by putting your clothing in the dryer on high heat for 20 minutes before putting them in the washer. You should also put your luggage in a separate area of your home to make sure that any potential bed bugs don’t hitch a ride into your bedroom.

And if you think you might have bed bugs in your home, contact a bed bug professional like Bed Bug Finders LLC. Good luck.

The Rasberry Ant: A Houston Original

Rasberry Ant

Rasberry Ant

The Crazy Rasberry ant (not to be confused with raspberry) was discovered in Houston, TX by exterminator Tom Rasberry. Since the ant’s discovery in 2002, the Rasberry ant has spread to 24 different counties in the state of Texas; and to other states across the South. The ants prefer the moisture, warmth, and humidity of the coast.

Characteristics Of Rasberry Ants

Rasberry ants, sometimes referred to as Tawny crazy ants, range in size from 1/16-1/8 inches long. They have slender bodies with long legs, and long antenna. They are reddish-brown in color, and are covered with fuzz. This fuzz makes the ant appear less glossy then other species of ant; and lead many to define the ant as “hairy.”

The Crazy Rasberry ant is a type of Crazy ant, that is well know for its rapid erratic movements. They do not move linearly like other ant species. If you were to watch the ant crawl, you might think it was lost or confused. This behavior is why the ant is labeled as “crazy.”

Why Rasberry Ants Are Harmful

Rasberry ants cause harm, both physical and economic, in several different ways. Large numbers of Rasberry ants cause short circuits, electrical equipment failure, and clog switching mechanisms. In some cases the ants have caused several thousand dollars in damage and remedial costs.

There’s another characteristic that makes Rasberry ants dangerous. The death of a Rasberry ant will cause it to release a chemical pheromone that summons other Rasberry ants to attack the threat. One exterminator said “… if a hundred-thousand are killed, millions more will attack.” Trying to exterminate these ants on your own can have hazardous consequences.

Rasberry Ant Control in Houston

In infested areas, large numbers of Rasberry ants have caused great aggravation to residents and homeowners. Infestations make it uncomfortable for residents to enjoy time in their yards. These pesky ants need to be dealt with.

Products that are effective in the treatment of Rasberry ants are not readily available to the public. If you believe your house or property is infested with these ants, call a professional pest control provider.

The Tell Tale Signs Of Mice

Uninvited guests are a nightmare, especially when those guests are disease carrying, smelly rodents with a penchant for working their way through your food and rubbish and leaving a trail of destruction. Here are the tell tale signs that mice have been in your home.

Odor

A strong smell of ammonia, almost musky will follow the mice as they mark their pathways and territories with urine. Cats and dogs are likely to notice the odor before you do and will express this through excitement where the mice are most active. If you see them take interest in particular cupboards or skirting boards then take a closer look for the other signs of an infestation.  It could just be that there is a rogue toy or treat that had previously gone unnoticed, however if there are other signs then you have mice. Such is there habit of urinating you may notice yellow trails building up along their trails.

Droppings

Mice pellets are around 5 mm in length and dark in color  where you suspect the mice have been there will be a number of them.  Check under the sink, in the dark corners underneath and inside drawers and around food containers and rubbish bags.

Scratching & Squeaking

Mice are noisy creatures and due to their poor eyesight and danger from predators they will move around the crevices and pathways around your walls and cupboards. They are nocturnal creatures so you will be able to hear their high pitched squeaking and the scurrying and scratching noises of their paws in the silence of the night.

Gnawing

Bite marks, or more accurately little nibble marks where they have happily gnawed through food packaging, wood, plastic or even cables. Mice have teeth that are always growing so will chew through most hard surfaces to relieve this. If you fear you have mice ensure food packets that have been opened are re-sealed and kept in air-tight containers .Food debris such as bread crumbs or cereal, or food left out is what attracts them in the first place. Ensure that food waste is put in a rubbish bin that is routinely emptied or has a strong lid.

Finally you may see a mouse, in which case it is likely there will be more nearby. Mice are quite small in size and of a light brown or grey color with a thin tail. They also have soft skeletons that allow them to fit through spaces just quarter of an inch thick making gaps in floorboards and cupboards ideal.
