Swarming Bees Attack Houston Women Killing Her Dog

Imagine walking your dog on a late September afternoon and suddenly being attacked by a swarm of agitated bees. That’s exactly what happened to a Houston woman last Wednesday. Unfortunately, the bee stings were not the worse sting she’d experience that day as her five year old mixed breed dog named Bella died as a result.

Swarming Bees

The 42 year old woman, Agathe Bourgogne, spent each day walking her rescue dog near Cambridge Glen Condos on Cambridge in Houston. Bella was said to be a very loyal and friendly dog that wouldn’t run into the street without her master. While on their daily walk, Bella went over to sniff a tree when she was suddenly attacked by a swarm of angry bees that had been disturbed by lawnmower earlier in the day.

Bourgone was stung seven times on her face, in her ears, and on her arms as she tried to rescue Bella who also suffered 14 bee stings in the face. The dog was rushed to the vet, but it was too late. Bella passed away shortly after arriving.

It has not been determined if the bees were Africanized. The bees were in the process of building a hive in an underground water meter. Bees like to build their hives inside any opening they can find. They were able to gain access to the underground water meter through a small opening in the top.

With much relief to all the residents that live nearby, the bees were removed by a Houston pest control company before they could hurt anybody else. Still though, the damage has been done… A heartbroken Agathe Bourgogne lost one of her best friends in Bella. For the complete story, click here.

Bee Problems?

If you do experience a bee problem, call a Houston pest control professional or bee removal company. Bee removal is often more costly, but instead of killing of the bee population the bees will be safely removed and relocated. A pest control company, on the other hand, may merely exterminate the bees and their colonies. Due to the way bees carry pollen on their bodies, dust pesticides are very successful at quickly eliminating bee problems.

Another West Nile Death in Texas

 Mosquito Alert

An 80-year old Fort Worth, TX resident died on Monday due to complications caused from West Nile Virus. It was the second confirmed fatality related to the virus in Tarrant County, which also has 159 confirmed human cases of the virus.

In nearby Dallas County, 190 human West Nile Virus cases have been reported resulting in 10 deaths. With the rising outbreak of West Nile Virus in Texas, a Dallas County Judge declared a public health emergency.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention states that almost 80 percent of the nation’s reported West Nile cases are from Texas, Oklahoma, and Mississippi. Mosquitoes kill more humans annually then any other animal or insect. People with compromised immune systems are most susceptible, especially the sick, young, and elderly. West Nile Virus is at its highest level since 2004.

Symptoms of West Nile Virus

The West Nile Virus actually causes two different forms of illness. The less severe illness causes flu-like symptoms with body aches, rashes, headaches, tiredness, and swollen lymph nodes. The more serious illnesses can advance dangerous neurological conditions such as encephalitis and meningitis.  Watch for muscle weakness, tremors, stupor of thought, and even convulsions.

Mosquito Control

Because mosquitoes breed so rapidly, the first line of defense against them is to kill their larva by applying a larvicide in any water on your property.  Pest control professionals agree that eliminating mosquito larvae with mosquito dunksis the most effective way to get rid of theses deadly pests. Each dunk treats up to 100 square feet of surface water, regardless of depth, and lasts for 30 days. Spraying for mosquitoes is a less effective alternative, but can be useful if done frequently.

Preventative Measures

Pest control professionals strongly encourage people to limit outdoor activity between the dusk and dawn hours because that’s when mosquitoes are most active. When you are outside, dress in clothing that will cover you from head-to-toe and use insect repellents containing DEET. Make sure to eliminate any stagnant water, often found in birdbaths or tire swings, because these are breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Use mosquito dunks and contact a pest control professional to ask about their mosquito control options.
