A Few Facts About Cockroaches

cockroach - The Infiltrator !!! :)

A Few Facts:

Cockroaches love the warm weather. Summer just happens to be the roach’s preferred season. They flourish in high temperatures. Once the temperatures dip lower than 50 degrees, these coldblooded pests will either die or go into hibernation. As the temperature warms up again, the roaches go back to feeding and breeding.

Cockroaches will eat almost anything, except poison. Taste hairs on the cockroaches’ head let it sample food first. Anything that tastes like poison is quickly discarded. Here are a few favorite roach dishes:

  • Sugary sweets
  • Hair
  • Salty snacks
  • Finger nails
  • Meats
  • Glue
  • Cheeses
  • Leather
  • Book bindings
  • Wood
  • Dead insects
  • Blood
  • Doggie doo

Cockroaches don’t discriminate. Regardless of who a person is, what they do for a living, where they live, or how immaculate their home is, cockroaches can be an issue. Roaches will enter your home through any crack or crevice they can find.

Cockroaches are killed off by eye wash. Boric acid, the antiseptic powder used in eye washes, is very successful in killing a roach. Cockroaches don’t distinguish boric acid as a poison, so they will scurry right on through it. The poison will adhere to their legs and antennae, and the roach will ingest it while cleaning itself. Within a few days, the roach will die.

Cockroaches cannot swim. While the roach’s waterproof outside layer enables it to float, they cannot swim. So contrary to popular belief, cockroaches do not come up household drains from the sewer—water in the traps will keep them out. If a home is left empty for an extended period of time, or a drain is not used for awhile, the traps can dry out and let roaches come through.

Cockroaches eat toothpaste.

Swarming Bees Attack Houston Women Killing Her Dog

Imagine walking your dog on a late September afternoon and suddenly being attacked by a swarm of agitated bees. That’s exactly what happened to a Houston woman last Wednesday. Unfortunately, the bee stings were not the worse sting she’d experience that day as her five year old mixed breed dog named Bella died as a result.

Swarming Bees

The 42 year old woman, Agathe Bourgogne, spent each day walking her rescue dog near Cambridge Glen Condos on Cambridge in Houston. Bella was said to be a very loyal and friendly dog that wouldn’t run into the street without her master. While on their daily walk, Bella went over to sniff a tree when she was suddenly attacked by a swarm of angry bees that had been disturbed by lawnmower earlier in the day.

Bourgone was stung seven times on her face, in her ears, and on her arms as she tried to rescue Bella who also suffered 14 bee stings in the face. The dog was rushed to the vet, but it was too late. Bella passed away shortly after arriving.

It has not been determined if the bees were Africanized. The bees were in the process of building a hive in an underground water meter. Bees like to build their hives inside any opening they can find. They were able to gain access to the underground water meter through a small opening in the top.

With much relief to all the residents that live nearby, the bees were removed by a Houston pest control company before they could hurt anybody else. Still though, the damage has been done… A heartbroken Agathe Bourgogne lost one of her best friends in Bella. For the complete story, click here.

Bee Problems?

If you do experience a bee problem, call a Houston pest control professional or bee removal company. Bee removal is often more costly, but instead of killing of the bee population the bees will be safely removed and relocated. A pest control company, on the other hand, may merely exterminate the bees and their colonies. Due to the way bees carry pollen on their bodies, dust pesticides are very successful at quickly eliminating bee problems.

Houston Ranks 12th in Top Bedbug Cities

bedbug

According to this report of the top bedbug infested cities, Houston, TX now ranks 12th on the list of 50. This year’s rankings have Cincinnati coming in second and New York City — the most-infested city for the past two years — coming in third. Cleveland, Miami, Indianapolis and New Haven joined the top 15 this year.

Bedbugs feed on human blood and prefer to live in beds or other household furniture. Victims are usually attacked while sleeping, oblivious to the fact that they are being bitten. Here is an informative graphic breaking down everything you need to know about bedbugs:

Symptoms of bedbug attacks can include irritating red welts on the skin and allergic reactions that are generated by the pest’s saliva. Because the bites remove some of the victim’s blood, prolonged bedbug contact can lead to anemic conditions although it is rare.

If you think you may have contracted bedbugs, you better call a Houston pest control professional: bedbugs are infamously challenging to eliminate on your own. TIME magazine reports, consumer “bug bombs” or “foggers” have been proven to be unproductive in exterminating the bedbugs and can even make an infestation worse. Consumers also frequently overuse home pesticides, which can cause illness and even death.

Can You Control Raspberry Ants in Houston?

Foraging ants (Eciton drepanophara)

The crazy Raspberry ant is very pervasive and can cause many problems. They can displace other ants, insects, and wildlife. They can cause factory systems to shut down. They can contaminate water sources. They have even cause a few traffic problems when shorting out stop lights. They are indeed a nuisance pest.

Can Houston Exterminators get rid of raspberry ants?

Per a local new station, “Raspberry ants are uncontrollable.” The ants invade by the thousands. Treating yourself may provide temporary relief, but they keep coming back. One man reports that he sprays and every night he finds thousands of more dead ants. They just keep coming. They are attracted to your water supply, sugar, and climate controlled shelter. If they get in they will quickly multiply producing thousands of more ants every day. As they spread, they leave pheromones that attract more of their kind. Yes, its not a pretty sight and yes they are difficult to get rid of.

Seth, Bulwark Manager in Houston, Says He Can Do It.

While the raspberry ant isn’t an easy job to take on, it is something that can be controlled. “We have hundreds of successful cases of controlling these difficult ants, right here in Houston. It’s not easy, but with the right product and a dedicated team it can be done.” Bulwark isn’t the only pest control company that would disagree with the reporters stance on controlling raspberry crazy ants. There are other Houston exterminators that have successfully tackled the raspberry ant problem. “It would be a lie to say that others can’t do it. But I can only speak for my own track record.”

Houston Ant Control for Raspberry Ants

You can identify raspberry ants by their spastic walk. They almost look like they are dancing or having convulsions. Crazy is a very good description of them. But not to confuse other black crazy ants with the raspberry ant. Regular crazy ants have longer legs than the raspberry ant. The best treatment plan applies products that will slowly kill of the colony. If you kill of the colony too quickly then you will never get the queen or queens, raspberry ants have more than one queen. Killing off the queens is key to successful Houston ant control.

Crazy Ants Moving Through Out Texas

Raspberry ants may have started in Houston of the docks of a few ships, but they have spread across the state and state lines. Currently, Raspberry ant problems are being found in Georgetown and Round Rock. They are spreading and as a whole, they are probably impossible to control and contain at this point.
